ASEAN, China fail to agree on talks on S. China Sea code of conduct
- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China failed Monday to agree to start official talks on a binding code of conduct in the South China Sea as part of efforts to ensure peace and stability in the area amid territorial disputes involving Beijing and some ASEAN member states.
- Wen was quoted by China News Service as telling the ASEAN leaders the two sides “should deal with issues, including disputes over territory or maritime rights, under the situation that would not be disturbed by outsiders,” an apparent reference to Chinese opposition to U.S. intervention in the disputes between China and some ASEAN members, including the Philippines and Vietnam.
