Until recently, Barrick gold was the world's largest gold miner. It got over-indebted and slipped a couple spots down the rankings.
We've built virtual statues of the founders of the tech giants but I find someone like Munk much more impressive. Mark Zuckerberg stumbled to the front of the line in something that was underway and through cunning and good fortune built a gigantic company.
Munk, meanwhile, built a company based on a commodity as old as civilization and found a way to do it better than anyone else. You have to admire that kind of business savvy.
Munk was born in Budapest and escaped the holocaust with his family as a teenager. He had forays into furniture and hotels before starting Barrick in 1979 at the age of 52 as an oil company before switching into mining. He retired in 2016.
