–Spokesman Says EU Confident Greece Can Implement Plan
BRUSSELS (MNI) – The European Commission is not involved in, or
aware of, any discussions to extend the three-year loan deal for Greece
which was brokered in May this year, a spokesman for the EU’s executive
arm said on Thursday.
“No, there is no discussion, there is no plan for any extension of
the current loan arrangement with Greece,” the Commission’s economic and
monetary affairs spokesman told reporters.
“I can only speak on behalf of the European Commission, we are not
involved in any discussion of this kind, we are not even aware (of such
discussions),” he said.
In May this year, Greece was offered E110 billion in loans by the
International Monetary Fund and its Eurozone partners in exchange for
implementing a strict austerity plan to cuts its budget deficit.
“What we know is Greece is on track to meet all the conditions set
out in the memorandum of understanding,” the spokesman said, adding that
the Commission has “expressed our confidence” that Greece will be able
to come back to the markets to finance its debt burden before the three
year aid deal ends.
“We remain confident that Greek authorities will…implement this
macroeconomic adjustment programme,” he said.
