FRANKFURT (MNI) – The survival of the Eurozone is not in question,
Eurogroup head Jean-Claude Juncker said in an interview with the German
weekly Die Zeit released Wednesday.

“The euro is among the world’s leading and strongest currencies. We
have a debt crisis of some Eurozone countries, but the substance and
survival of the Eurozone are not in question,” Juncker told the
newspaper.

Juncker, who is also the prime minister of Luxembourg, said that
the common currency had shielded the Eurozone during the crisis from
excessive foreign exchange movements.

“The euro has brought the Eurozone monetary and economic stability
that even current difficulties cannot call into question,” Juncker said.

He also said that he wished “Switzerland to join the European
Union.” It is “a geostrategic absurdity that we have this white spot on
the European map.”

As a representative of another small European state, Juncker said
he could only recommend Switzerland to join the union. “Luxembourg’s
influence in Europe is bigger than that of Switzerland,” he said.
