Back in the days of the Soviet Union, it was said not to believe anything until it had been officially denied. In some ways, the ECB reminds us of the Kremlin in those times.
At various times Trichet has called the idea of the Eurozone following the US into recession as absurd, the idea of a credit crunch as absurd. Today, he calls the idea of any country leaving the eurozone as absurd. Given his track record, he may want to pull his punches a bit.
Trichet also says the UK is very welcome to join the euro. The UK has had the good sense to ignore that invitation thus far, and looks likely to stay away for some time to come.
