BERLIN (MNI) – German Economics Minister Rainer Bruederle warned
Monday that a prolonged interruption of air traffic due to the Iceland
volcano eruption would have serious economic consequences.
“The ash cloud has a significant impact on the economy,” Bruederle
told reporters here, noting that many industry branches depended on
delivery of material via airplanes.
If the production chain in the global economy is disrupted over a
longer period “we will get into a serious situation,” the minister
asserted.
Bruederle said the president of the German Industry Association
(BDI), Hans-Peter Keitel, had told him on Sunday that the production
process in many business branches is already significantly disturbed.
The minister announced that he will meet industry representatives
this afternoon to discuss how a negative fallout from the aviation
problem can be avoided.
