BERLIN (MNI) – The German government said Friday it expects that
the planned European fiscal aid for the Spanish banking sector will find
a supportive majority in the German parliament next week.

“The federal government always gets the necessary majorities and
this time again it will be like this,” spokesman Steffen Seibert said at
a regular government press conference here.

The largest opposition party, the center-left SPD, already signaled
Thursday that it would vote with the government coalition on the aid for
Spain.

The Bundestag will vote on the aid measures next Thursday.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s center-right CDU/CSU-FDP coalition controls a
majority of her own in the lower house and in principle does not depend
on the support of the opposition. Yet, in previous votes some members of
her coalition had voted against fiscal aid measures for ailing Eurozone
states.

The opposition-controlled upper house, the Bundesrat representing
the 16 states, will not get to vote on the aid measures for Spain.
