BERLIN (MNI) – EU heads of states and governments in Brussels won’t
make any decisions on aid for Greece at the upcoming EU Council meeting
later this week, a high-ranking German government source told Market
News International on Tuesday.

“The EU Council won’t decide on aid for Greece,” and any such aid
would come only as a last resort, he said.

A precondition for aid is that Greece would have exhausted its
capacity to raise money on the international capital markets, the
official stressed. Moreover, the German government wants a “substantial
contribution” to such a financial aid package to come from the
International Monetary Fund, the official said.

There must also be lessons drawn from the Greek problems, such as
more effective prevention measures and sanctions, the source said. These
are included in a revision of the EU Treaties, he explained.
