BERLIN (MNI) – German Finance Minister Schaeuble on Friday said
there is no alternative to financial aid for Greece in order to protect
the stability of the euro.
“We must defend the common European currency as a whole,” Schaeuble
said in a speech in Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag,
ahead of a vote on the government’s aid bill for Greece.
As a consequence of the current crisis, rules for an orderly
insolvency of a Eurozone member state should be established, Schaeuble
urged, reiterating previous comments.
Both the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, the upper house of parliament
representing the 16 states, will vote on the Greece aid bill today.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU/CSU-FDP coalition wields majorities
in both houses of parliament. The opposition Greens have said they will
also vote for the bill in the Bundestag.
Wolfgang Reinhart, Minister for European Affairs in the CDU-FDP
governed state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, told German Phoenix public
television earlier today that a majority for the bill in the Bundesrat
was also assured.
Several German professors have announced that they will file a
lawsuit at the German Constitutional Court today against the German aid
for Greece.
