FRANKFURT (MNI) – The German economy continued to churn out new
jobs in March, as employment levels rose for the 14th consecutive month
to hit a new all-time high, the Federal Statistical Office reported on
Thursday.
As a result, total employment in seasonally adjusted International
Labour Organisation (ILO) terms came to 40.751 million, up 39,000 from
February’s level.
Signs continue to point to further job creation in the short term.
A European Commission survey showed that firms in all sectors
except services hiked their hiring expectations last month. The
employment outlook in industry rose to a record high, while hiring
intentions in the construction sector reached their best level since
early 1992.
The Ifo institute’s employment barometer also underlined the robust
hiring propensity of manufacturing and trade companies, rising for the
seventh consecutive month in March to its highest level ever.
“The labour market outlook in Germany remains excellent,” the
institute said.
Supporting this, the purchasing managers index (PMI) showed that
employment continued to expand in April, extending the run of increases
to 14 months, as both manufacturing and services reported more staff.
At 8:55 GMT today, the Labour Ministry is scheduled to release
seasonally adjusted jobless figures for April.
