As Bitcoin surpasses the $12,000 mark, here's something to check out if you're looking to find out how volatile the virtual currency can be.

So, what WSJ did was travel around New York during the day and withdrawing $10 worth of Bitcoin at five different ATM stops.

• Stop 1: $9,347 at 1016 in the morning
• Stop 2: $9,276 at 1206 in the afternoon (down 0.77%)
• Stop 3: $9,691 at 1357 in the afternoon (up 4.48%)
• Stop 4: $9,550 at 1550 in the afternoon (down 1.45%)
• Stop 5: $10,051 at 1939 in the evening (up 5.24%)

All in all, the $50 exchanged to Bitcoin at the end of the day was worth $52.84 - after deducting $3.20 in fees. Can you say the same about your cold hard cash?
