Australia’s Port Hedland handles about 20% of the global seaborne market for iron ore, it is used by used by BHP, Fortescue, and Atlas Iron.
Port Hedland Port Authority figures show:
- Ore shipments to China were 22.3 million tonnes in August
- Up 9% from July
- Up 33% than in August last year
- Iron ore is Australia’s single biggest export earner
- Overall iron ore exports from the port were 27.4 million tonnes, up 3% m/m and up 20% y/y
- Exports from the port to Japan were 2.2 million tonnes, down from 2.8 million in July
- Shipments to South Korea increased to 2.1 million tonnes, from 1.9 million
