And if the last two posts weren’t gloomy enough yesterday brought more sad news with the announcement that Jack Bruce, bassist from 1960’s legendary supergroup Cream, has died aged 71

Jack Bruce - undoubtedly one of the great bass players of all time

Cream, which also included Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, can be considered one of the most inluential bands in rock history and laid a path for many bands to follow. They sold 35 million albums in just over two years and were given the first ever platinum disc for Wheels of Fire.

Cream split in November 1968 at the height of their popularity, with Bruce feeling he had strayed too far from his ideals. He never again reached the commercial heights he did with Cream but his reputation as one of the best bass guitarists in the business grew throughout the subsequent decades.

Bruce wrote and sang most of the songs, including “I Feel Free” and “Sunshine Of Your Love” and for those of you not yet familiar with his work I do recommend a search through the many archives including the West, Bruce and Laing lineup

RIP Jack and thank-you. To cheer myself up I’m now heading out to lunch, driven by my youngest daughter Lily who this week passed her driving test first time. Some cheery news on which to finish at least!

Enjoy the rest of your week-end out there
