JAPAN DATA: The volume of Japanese exports to the NIEs (Hong Kong,
Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan) is likely to show an uptrend in
mid-2011 as excess inventories of semiconductors and other electronic
parts in those newly industrialized economies are expected to enter a
declining phase by then, the Cabinet Office said in an analysis paper
released Tuesday. Electronic parts account for 12-13% of Japan’s total
exports to the NIEs in volume. The Cabinet Office said the recent
decline in exports to Asia, which has trimmed overall Japanese exports,
is due partially to the inventory adjustment for electronic parts among
the NIEs. The index for Japanese exports to Asia in volume stood at
121.1 in November 2010 (against 100.0 for the 2005 base year), up from
119.8 in October but it has been falling gradually since hitting a
recent high of 126.4 in April 2010. The index of Japan’s total export
volume was at 99.9 in November vs. 98.5 in October and a recent high of
105.5 in April.
