TOKYO (MNI) – The value of construction orders received in March by
the 50 largest contractors in Japan rose 42.3% from a year earlier to
Y2.26 trillion, marking the first year-on-year rise in two months, the
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on Friday.
The March rise reversed from -20.3% in February. It compared with
the record drop of -42.8% marked in July 2009.
Japan’s value of construction orders in fiscal that ended on March
31 fell 14.2%, worsening from a 12.3% fall in fiscal 2008.
The breakdown for the latest month follows (on-year changes in the
previous month in parentheses):
— Domestic private sector: +75.3% y/y at Y1.48 trillion (vs.
-20.2%), marking the first y/y rise in two months.
— Public sector: -14.3% y/y at Y548.1 billion (vs. -12.8%),
marking the second consecutive y/y drop.
— Overseas: +379.9% y/y at Y173.87 billion vs. a loss of Y8.3
billion in February, marking the first y/y rise in two months.
