TOKYO (MNI) – Germany could agree to a Spanish request for an
additional aid in order to defend the euro, the Nikkei newspaper said on
Thursday, citing German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble.

Until now, Spain has not lodged application for an aid from member
countries of the euro, and Germany has not taken a clear stance on the
issue.

The Spanish government deserves praise for the “decisiveness” of
its 2013 budget, which promises more spending cuts, the finance minister
was quoted as saying in an interview with the newspaper.

Schauble also said that while stressing Germany does not expect
Spain to ask for a bailout, it is preparing for “every possible
scenario.”

The Bundestag, the lower house of Germany’s legislature, would need
to approve aid measures before euro-zone finance ministers make a final
decision, according to Schauble.

Referring to the situation in Greece, the finance minister stressed
that despite the worse than expected economic situation there, Greece
must proceed its pledged structural reforms.
