TOKYO (MNI) – Japanese retail sales posted a second straight
year-on-year drop in September as demand for digital TVs remained
sluggish after rush purchases in July, when Japan terminated analogue
broadcasting services, data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and
Industry released on Thursday showed.
Retail sales fell 1.2% in September from a year earlier following a
2.6% drop in the previous month.
The September reading came in much weaker than the median forecast
for a 0.1% fall in a Market News International survey of economists.
In September, retail sales of machinery and equipment including
consumer electronics tumbled 21.4% versus -19.2% in the previous month,
marking the second straight y/y fall.
Retail sales of automobiles fell 0.3% from a year earlier, posting
the 12th consecutive y/y drop after a 19.0% fall in August.
Other details from the latest data:
Commercial sales, or combined sales at the wholesale and retail
levels (y/y): September +0.1%, a fifth straight y/y rise.
Sales at the wholesale level (y/y): September +0.6%, also a fifth
straight y/y rise.
Large retail store sales on a same-store adjusted basis (y/y):
September -3.6%, a second straight y/y fall.
Large retail store sales, unadjusted (y/y): September -2.5%, a
second straight y/y fall.
