TOKYO (MNI) – New vehicle sales in Japan posted the first
year-on-year decline in 13 months in September as the effects of
government stimulus measures have waned, data released by the Japan
Automobile Dealers Association on Monday showed.
New vehicle sales fell 8.1% on year to 288,478 units in September.
It followed a rises of 7.3% in August, 36.1% in July, 40.9% in June,
66.3% in May and 92.0% in April.
In last December the government revived subsidies for buying
low-emission vehicles, supporting automobile sales until recently, but
the program was terminated again in September.
Separately, the Japan Mini Vehicle Association reported that
domestic sales of new small vehicles (with engine displacement of less
than 660 cc) rose 6.6% y/y to 158,208 in September, the 12th straight
year-on-year rise, following a 22.1% gain in August.
