FRANKFURT (MNI) – Eurogroup head Jean-Claude Juncker has informed
EMU finance ministers that he will stick to his plan to resign from the
post early next year, Germany’s Handelsblatt reported Monday evening,
citing EU diplomats.
The prime minister of Luxembourg has reportedly informed German
Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and others of a specific date
towards the start of the year, the business daily said.
Juncker had said in June he wished to step down next year, sparking
initial discussions among member states over a successor, including
Schaeuble. Those talks were suspended amid disagreements, sparking some
hope that Juncker would stay on longer than planned.
Handelsblatt said it was unclear whether Schaeuble would now renew
his candidacy for the post.
