The global recession doesn’t appear to have reached the cold Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The prairie province is apparently in the black and provincial debt is actually shrinking. In its largest city Saskatoon, a C$ 200 mln riverfront development is moving ahead, along with a plan to build the province’s tallest building.
According to the Conference Board of Canada the province, which is rich in uranium, oil and potash, could see growth this year of 1.6%. Meanwhile the Saskatchewan government delivers its’ budget on March 18 and has promised it will be balanced. Part of any surplus will be used to help pay off Saskatchewans’ long-term debt, which the government has already whittled down 38% in two years to $4.2 bln. The Conference Board expects the province to add 8,000 jobs this year. All sounds pretty good to me. I’m off to pack some warm clothing.
