BERLIN (MNI) – Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn in an
interview published Thursday rejected the joint demand by Germany and
France for EU treaty changes to pass on some of national budget
sovereignty to the European level.
“The only vital goal must now be the short term and effective
stabilisation of the Eurozone,” Asselborn told German daily Die Welt.
“Everything else is secondary, especially plans for broad-based treaty
changes, which are arduous and difficult to implement.”
Later today in Brussels, European leaders will kick off a two-day
summit aimed at stemming the spread of the sovereign debt crisis in the
Eurozone.
On Wednesday, Germany and France reaffirmed that Eurozone
governments with public deficits over 3% of GDP could face an
accelerating loss of sovereignty to EU authorities in order to redress
their finances.
