In speaking with other Euro zone leaders today, Merkel’s spokesman says she is confident of a Greek deal. Her finance minister is much less confident, worried about pouring more money into a seemingly bottomless pit.

Schaeuble’s reluctance is a bit ironic, as he is seen as the most europhilic of the German ministers as a member if the old guard, with ties dating back to the era of Helmut Kohl.

If he is concerned, it is probably right for us to be concerned.
