NEW YORK (MNI) – U.S. online recruitment activity among MNI’s
sample of top employers fell sharply in the October 9 week, to a -11.4
diffusion reading vs -2.5 in the prior week.

A negative reading indicates that a greater share, and in this case
a noticeably greater share, of the 500 sampled companies decreased their
online recruitment in the week vs those that increased recruitment.

After this week’s results, the trend for activity is no longer
positive based on the four-week average which is now in the minus
column, at -2.5 vs 3.2 in the prior week.

The industry breakdown shows wide contraction with 10 of 12
industries posting weekly declines.

Industries showing the most negative trends in activity are
information and professional & business services.

Recruitment among manufacturing firms had been picking up steam but
this week the group is among those in the negative column. Retail is
also in the negative column, breaking a string of strong showings.

Job openings in MNI’s sample total 256,000 in the latest week, or
1.4% of the sample’s total U.S. employment.

MNI’s indicator tracks individual job listings on a weekly basis
from a sample of 500 of the nation’s largest employers, a group that
employs a total of 19.0 million U.S. workers.

Editor’s Note: MNI compiles its job openings indicator by tracking
career sections of company websites producing a diffusion index that
measures distribution of change.
