Mnuchin talked about the currency
Normally the Treasury Secretary is a reliable cheerleader for the dollar but in an interview with CNBC earlier today.
"Obviously, the short-term issues of the dollar have both positive and negative impacts for different parts of the economy," Mnuchin said in an interview. "Obviously, as it relates to trade, having a weaker dollar is somewhat better for us."
Along with that he said that where the dollar trades in the short term is "less of a concern for him."
Along with that he said a stronger US dollar was "somewhat inevitable" due to the strength of the economy and confidence in the currency.
"I do think over long periods of time, the dollar's strength is an indication of the reserve currency and the confidence people have in the U.S. economy," he said.
I think this is a case of finding a story to fit choppy price action around month end but feel free to draw your own conclusions.
