Ahead of his meeting with Merkel, Italian PM Monti has warned that his austerity measures may trigger protests without signs of progress.

In an interview with Die Welt, the official says “I am demanding heavy sacrifices from Italians” adding “I can only do this if concrete advantages become visible.”

He went on to warn, if not “a protest against Europe will develop in Italy, including against Germany which is seen as the ringleader of EU intolerance, and against the European Central Bank.”

Monti and Merkel set to give press conference in Berlin at 1.00 pm local time.
