US Senate finance committee chairman Orrin Hatch — who is also the most-senior US Republican Senator — says he has an ‘open mind’ on raising the Federal gasoline tax. He called it a ‘user fee’ and a ‘small price to pay’ for the top-notch US highway system.
The US Federal gasoline tax has been steady at 18.4 cents per gallon since 1993 (4.75 cents/liter). State taxes average about 50-cents per gallon.
If the US ever wanted to change the tax, now would be the time to do it. But I don’t think it will happen because a) I don’t think it would get through Congress and b) it’s not really needed with US finances headed in the right direction.
US gasoline taxes are some of the lowest in the developed world.
