There’s been some statements from Japan’s Abe and US’s Obama on a variety of subjects, part of which was the announcement that no deal had yet been struck on US-Japan trade talks.
This sent the Nikkei down to 14367.13 but we’ve now seen a recovery to 14422.90.
Obama is on a state visit to Japan. Other comments from them are:
Abe:
- Amari and Fromani to continue TPP talks
- agreed with Obama to promote broad range of security/defence cooperation
- will involve China in development of free and open Asia-Pacific region
- agrees with Obama that status of Ukraine can not be changed by force
- will continue to gain understanding for his Yasukini shrine visit
Obama:
- important progress made on TPP talks, closer to agreement on issues like autos and agriculture
- US can not accept less than meaningful access in trade talks
- now is the time for bold steps to reach a comprehensive TPP agreement
- US and Japan must move out of comfort zones to deliver trade deal
- US-Japan secruity treaty covers Senkaku Islands
- US stands with Japan on abductions in N Korea
- China is a critical country to region and world
- US wants to encourage peaceful rise of China, hopes they will continue to engage with US
