Trump has dropped a difficult demand that China halt cyber theft as he aims to get a deal across the finish line.
"The US is instead likely to accept a watered-down commitment from Beijing as an alternative," the report says.
"A lot of issues are being jettisoned from this negotiation because President Trump wants a deal," one of the people said.
China has never accepted the main premise of the US idea that it sponsored theft. So the likely outcome is that China simply reasserts old pledges that it wouldn't "engage or knowingly support" theft.
