BERLIN (MNI) – German federal net new borrowing this year will be
less than E20 billion, far below the E48.4 billion earmarked in the 2011
budget bill, the German daily Bild reported Wednesday, citing government
sources.

The German finance ministry did not confirm the number. “All I can
confirm is that we surely won’t have federal net new borrowing above E22
billion,” spokesman Martin Kotthaus said at a regular government press
conference here.

Norbert Barthle, the parliamentary budget speaker of Chancellor
Angela Merkel’s CDU/CSU government, said last month that federal net new
borrowing might be heading towards E20 billion.

“It will likely be E22 billion but may even approach E20 billion,”
Barthle said then.

The lawmaker predicted that federal net new borrowing next year
would also be below the E26.1 billion earmarked in the 2012 budget bill.
