–House To Consider Farm Bill; Senate To Consider Biz Tax Cut Bill
By John Shaw
WASHINGTON (MNI) – As Congress returns from its Fourth of July
recess, House Republican leaders have organized a week largely devoted
to hammering the administration on the 2010 health care law and the
Dodd-Frank law.
The House will vote Wednesday to repeal President Obama’s health
care law whose constitutionality was recently upheld by the Supreme
Court.
The House is expected to vote to repeal the 2010 law on a party
line vote. The repeal bill is certain to die in the Senate. The House
has already voted to repeal the health care law, so this week’s vote is
almost completely symbolic.
Prior to the House vote on Wednesday, several House panels will
hold hearings on the health law’s impact on job creation and economic
growth.
The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday at
10:30 a.m. ET on the legal issues surrounding the Supreme Court’s ruling
that the individual mandate constitutes a tax. Several legal scholars
will testify.
The House Oversight and Government Reform will hold a hearing
Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. ET on the health care law’s impact on job creation.
One of the Oversight panel’s subcommittees will also hold a hearing
Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET on the law’s impact on doctors and patients.
Several subcommittees of the House Financial Services Committee
will hold hearings this week on the Dodd-Frank law.
One subcommittee will hold a hearing Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET on the
law’s impact on job creators, credit, and customers of financial
institutions. An assortment of trade association representatives from
the financial services industry will testify.
Another subcommittee will hold a hearing Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET on
Dodd-Frank’s impact on mortgage banking. Trade association
representatives from the financial services industry will testify at
this hearing as well.
A subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing
Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET on the effect of Dodd-Frank on competition in the
financial services industry.
In other key hearings this week, the Senate Finance Committee will
hold a hearing Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. ET on how tax reform could boost
economic growth. The panel will hear from a group of academic experts.
The Finance Committee will also hold a hearing Wednesday at 10 a.m.
ET on Medicare physician payments.
In addition to voting Wednesday to repeal the 2010 health care law,
the full House will consider its 2012 farm bill.
The Senate will take up a bill this week that offers tax breaks for
firms to buy new equipment and hire new workers.
