WASHINGTON (MNI) – Durable goods orders rose 0.3% in July, a much
smaller rise than the 2.5% increase expected, as the anticipated surge
in aircraft orders was offset by declines in other sectors, data
released Wednesday morning by the Commerce Department showed.
Transportation orders rose 13.1% in July on a 75.9% rise in
nondefense aircraft orders and a 5.3% rise in motor vehicles and parts
orders. Defense aircraft orders fell 8.3%.
However, durables goods orders excluding transportation fell 3.8%
in the month on declines in machinery, computers and electronic
products, electrical equipment, and fabricated metals products. Primary
metals orders posted a small increase.
Nondefense capital goods orders were down 2.8% in July, and fell
8.0% excluding aircraft orders. A Market News International calculation
shows civilian aircraft capital goods orders rose 119.8% in the month.
Durable goods new orders were revised up in June, resulting in a
0.1% decline that month, in contrast to the previously reported 1.2%
decline.
Durable goods shipments rose 2.2% in July, also lifted by a strong
showing from the transportation component. Nondefense capital goods
shipments were up 1.4% in the month, but were down 1.5% when civilian
aircraft orders were excluded.
Durable goods inventories were up 0.6% in July, while durable goods
unfilled orders declined 0.1%.
