Canada capacity utilization dips in the third quarter
  • Capacity utilization 81.4% versus 83.0% estimate
  • Q2 capacity utilization came in at 82.0%. The first quarter came in at 81.4%.
  • The decline was the first decline after four consecutive quarterly increases
  • Construction 90.1% in the third quarter versus 94.1% in the second quarter. Residential construction fell -8.4%.
  • Forestry and logging capacity felt -7.1% to 80.0%
  • Oil and gas extraction rose from 77.1% in the second quarter to 80.7% in the third quarter
  • Capacity utilization mining quarrying excluding oil and gas extraction rose 4.9% to 84.9% from 80.0% in the second quarter
  • Year-over-year Manufacturing capacity utilization fell -0.1% to 75.1%
  • Year-over-year capacity utilization declined in four of the 21 major manufacturing industrial groups
  • Transportation equipment manufacturers falling the most that -17.9% to 62.0%.. This was largely a result of the chip shortage. Motor vehicle manufacturing felt -10.8%
  • Coil manufacturers rose and 9.4% to 86.0% in the third quarter
