LONDON (MNI) – UK consumer confidence rebounded strongly in May,
rising 10 points to -21, according to the latest GfK NOP Consumer
Confidence Index.
That score is still three points lower than the same month of 2010,
while the annual moving average is now -23, GfK NOP said.
Consumers appear to have become much more confident about the
economic situation over the past 12 months (-44 versus -57) as well as
in the coming 12 (-3 versus -14), GfK NOP noted.
As regards their personal financial situation, consumers are
also more confident (-18 vs -23) for the past 12 months and
much more for the next 12 months (-3 vs -14).
The major purchase index rose to -26 vs -31.
Nick Moon, MD of GfK NOP Social Research, said it was too early to
observe any impact from last week’s Budget for Growth but said that
confidence was continuing to languish.
“We have seen an almost unprecedented jump in consumer confidence
this month. May’s figures show the second largest rise ever – only May
1993 was higher, when it improved by 12 points. In the 449 months that
the index has been running, single-month movement on this scale –
either up or down – has only occurred on ten occasions”.
