  • Says that trade talks should take place on an equal footing

It's looking more and more likely that China may back out of trade talks with the US, scheduled for 20 September, if the US decides to go ahead with the $200 billion tariffs before then. This was hinted earlier in the day by a report from the WSJ here.

As another reminder, should the US proceed with the $200 billion worth of tariffs, it'll likely prompt China to go with a range of unconventional measures such as restricting US investments/businesses to making it tough for US companies to get their goods through Chinese customs/borders. This is due to the fact that China will not be able to retaliate with tariffs of equal amounts considering they import less than $200 billion in US goods.
