GM deserts monthly reports

It's the first full business day of the month and that usually means US auto sales data. The numbers generally trickle out from manufacturers throughout the day and then are tallied shortly before the US close.

Not any more.

GM today announced that it will no longer report monthly and instead move to quarterly announcements.

"Thirty days is not enough time to separate real sales trends from short-term fluctuations in a very dynamic, highly competitive market," said a statement from GM.

The numbers were a good early gauge of the strength of consumers each month. Even without GM participating, they will remain a good measure. The risk is that other auto makers follow GM's lead.

Update: Evidently, this will come into effect after today's monthly report (which showed a 15.7% rise compared to +5.1% expected)
