The catch up to the Easter holiday period begins
The daily death count is the highest since 11 March, so that is a little disconcerting as the number of hospitalisations continues to rack up in recent weeks.
The 7-day incidence rate is seen easing to 105.7 but that likely owes to the Easter holiday effect and we'll get a better sense of the actual situation some time mid-next week.
The more worrisome statistic is that the number of COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care has moved up to 4,439 (+84) as of yesterday with there being just 3,104 (13%) intensive care beds available across the country.
Even at the peak in early January, medical capacity wasn't as stretched as it is now with there being roughly 4,500 to 4,600 (~18%) intensive care beds still available. As a reminder, there are other patients suffering from diseases other than COVID-19 too.
The German government has come out to warn that the health system is being threatened amid the latest virus wave with Merkel said to back a 'short national lockdown' ahead of her meeting with state leaders next Monday to decide on further measures.
