Ireland prime minister Leo Varadkar on the wires 8 Dec 2017
- We have reached a satisfactory conclusion in talks
- Irish border agreement is politically "bullet proof", provides cast iron guarantees
- Very happy to welcome additional language in border agreement
- Does not want border in Irish Sea
- It is a matter for the UK to decide if they want a hard or soft Brexit
- The fact that we're talking in terms of regulatory alignment is helpful for UK/EU trade deal
- Transition period of 2 years is decent, would be happy if it was longer
- Transition period must be linked to how long trade agreements take to be negotiated and ratified
Meanwhile, British minister Michael Gove is also commenting:
- Transition period will be used to iron out details of future relationship
- Seems clear that we will have a 2-year transition deal
- Trade over Irish border will be protected in context of whole UK trade deal with EU
- Brexit bill will be less than what the press is speculating
- Parliament to support UK PM May in upcoming votes on Brexit
Just more jibber-jabber post-May/Juncker this morning. GBP/USD currently at 1.3505, a slight retreat. Meanwhile, EUR/GBP holding firmly below 0.8700 now at 0.8695.
Woops, look like Mike also had those Gove comments earlier here. But yeah, as mentioned, just more post-Brexit deal talks. Nothing too impactful as more politicians make the rounds with their comments.
