Lega leader Matteo Salvini with some comments

Salvini is pleading to Forza Italia and Five Star Movement to "stop bickering" or else a new election will have to be held again.

Currently, Italian president Mattarella is holding a round of talks with party leaders - but is believed to be favouring Salvini for the premier mandate.

There is a bit of a gridlock there as Five Star Movement - the single biggest party in the election - leader Luigi Di Maio insisting on the premier mandate, while wanting no role for Forza Italia, which is led by Silvio Berlusconi.

Lega's centre-right alliance got the most votes in the election, but they still fell short of a working majority. If Mattarella isn't able to clear a preliminary mandate by next week, either Berlusconi or Di Maio will have to make concessions otherwise another election is indeed very possible.
