Republicans can only lose two votes
The tax cut debate will ramp up again this week with Congress returning from recess. A vote on the tax bill could take place as soon as Wednesday if Democratic stall tactics fail.
Six senators Republican are holding out support for the bill over the deficit or structure of the bill. Three have already announced they're retiring or are assumed to be so they don't have to worry about getting voted out. They are:
- John McCain
- Bob Corker
- Jeff Flake
Flake, of all Republican senators, is the most likely to vote against the bill. If two other Republicans joins him, the bill will be defeated unless they can get support from a Democrat.
Others who are holding out on supporting the bill are:
- Susan Collins
- Ron Johnson
- Steve Daines
The final two have voiced concerns that the bill does too much for corporations and not enough for small business.
The main view, however, repeated over and over again is that Republicans need to get something done and if they fail on this bill, they will be very vulnerable in the mid-terms next November.
