The term 'Swiss quartz' may not be one that'll ring any bells as time goes by

Further to the Swiss trade balance data released earlier, the details show that Swiss watchmakers have shipped the fewest number of quartz watches in 33 years.

In terms of value, the 17 million quartz watches shipped was worth CHF 3.5 billion - lower by 3.8% compared to that of 2016.

Mechanical timepieces have been gaining popularity over the years, and the introduction of fitness watches and smart watches (Apple has been the biggest beneficiary in this area) certainly hasn't helped in that regard. While the Swiss economy will surely continue to do fine (exports of all watches still grew on the year), one of the hallmarks associated with the country may soon fade away - at least to the general society.
