Axios report
Axios has obtained a PowerPoint deck and a memo that were presented to senior Trump administration officials regarding the yet-to-be-built 5G national cell phone network and argues that it needs to be nationalized to protect it from China and to stay ahead of China.
Nationalisation might not be the right word. The memo says an option is for the government to build it but it's traditionally the domain of wireless providers.
From the report:
"A source familiar with the documents' drafting said a single centralized network is what's required to protect America against China and other bad actors."
They also note that other parts of the spectrum would be left open for private networks.
Look for this one to make waves in telecom stocks on Monday. It makes a fairly good argument that a strong 5G network is needed in order to create a secure pathway for emerging technologies like self-driving cars.
The memo also has some fretting about China getting ahead of the US in Artificial Intelligence.
The 5G network is expected to run at 10-20 gigabites per second.
