Some caveats before signing
- TPP Nations have agreed on the core elements of a deal
- TPP deal includes for specific items for which substantial progress was made by consensus must be achieved prior to signing
- a limited set of provisions from original deal will be suspended
The US withdrew from the TPP shortly after Pres. Trump was elected. However, the remaining 11 partners are looking to complete a "new" deal. The 11 countries include:
Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, NewZealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.
That deal hit a snag when Canada PM Trudeau did not show for a key meeting and pushed for more changes. The leaders were looking to sign a deal on Saturday. Concerns seem to be focused on the auto industry and easing of rules that would allow Japan automakers to use parts from other countries in cars sold in North America. Canada fears that it would be hurt auto parts makers in Canada.
The latest headlines suggest they are close but not quite at the finish line.
