Trump on Iran and the nuclear deal
- No action taken by Iran has been more dangerous than its pursuit of nuclear weapons
- This was a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never been made
- Cites Israel documents that Iran tried to pursue nuclear weapons
- US can't allow sunset clause
- Inspections lack adequate mechanisms, can't inspect military facilities
- We can't prevent an Iran nuclear bomb under this deal
- Leaves JCPOA
- Will sign memorandum to begin reinstating sanctions
- Any nation that aids Iran on nukes will face sanctions
- "Iran's leaders will say they refuse to negotiate a new deal. That's fine. I'd probably say same thing. But fact is, they will want to negotiate... I am ready, willing and able."
The critical point is that he will exit the deal. A memorandum isn't exactly action.
That and the conciliatory tone at the end about being willing to renegotiate is certainly notable. It wasn't quite the fire-and-fury it could have been.
Oil is higher on the headlines, up to $70.39 then backing off down to $69.50.
What we're waiting for here is some clarification about what goes into effect right away, if anything.
