Comments by UK PM spokesman, James Slack
- May made clear to Rutte that she needs additional reassurances on backstop
- Working towards achieving that and intends to get them before 21 January
- Cabinet will meet tomorrow afternoon, discussion will include no-deal preparations
Pretty much confirms what was mentioned by May in parliament yesterday. Do be reminded that the UK parliament enters into a recess period beginning from 20 December to 7 January. I would assume European leaders to also observe a similar break period after the EU summit this week up until next year as well.
That leaves a very tight deadline to get things done as even if May manages to get the vote in her favour, the deal still needs to be ratified in just under two months.
