Latest data released by Challenger, Gray, and Christmas Inc - 3 January 2019
- Prior +35.3%
- Layoffs 52.99k
- Prior 43.88k
The data provides information on the number of announced corporate layoffs by industry and region and acts as a general labour market indicator. Retail job cuts leads the way this time around and is up by 45% from last January, with Challenger noting that the industry is going through a "transformation" to be more tech-involved.
The layoffs are up from December which could be explained with the holiday season ending. Anyway, not a major release in terms of labour market data as we will have the non-farm payrolls tomorrow.
