The S&P 500 is down 0.9% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.0% shortly after the open. The Nasdaq Composite is 1.3% lower.
Banks are under heavy pressure with the KRE bank index down 4.1%.
Commodity-related stocks are also selling off on fears about the Chinese economy after weak trade data.
